Perceived Safety Map is an interactive Flash application of a map of a portion of North Avenue in Atlanta, GA. As a class, we were tasked with the job of selecting an idea which we felt we could visualize by the use of a map.

I chose to create a map in it’s simplest form, point A to point B, and find a way to display the perceived safety of the different areas on the map. I also thought it would be important to display what in the environment influenced that feeling of safety, and to rank it’s influence on a scale of green to red. The colored shapes can be hovered over and the user will be able see a bubble which shows what is influencing that particular area.

The application has two different views: a hand-drawn, sketched view and a photographed and satellite view. For the satellite view, I walked along the opposite side of the street, taking photos of each inch. I stitched these photos together by hand, printed them out, and then traced over the span to create the sketched view.
