Symphonious Swelling of Spores is a visualization of pollen count data from March 1, 2008 to March 31, 2008. The data was taken from records on the Atlanta Allergy website, and there are four different levels of pollen. On days with the least amount of pollen, there are only a few pollen grains floating in the air and only one person is sneezing. On days with the most amount of pollen, everyone is sneezing, and there are lots of pollen spores floating around the stage. One issue with the data is that there was no pollen data recorded on Saturdays and Sundays. In response, the performers close their curtains, as if they are not working on the weekend. When I started researching and gathering ideas for this project, I was influenced by the detailed images I found of individual pollen spores. From there, I found some beautifully detailed images of Victorian paper dolls, and decided to let this be my inspiration for the rest of the aesthetics in the piece. #gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-1 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; [...]

Perceived Safety Map is an interactive Flash application of a map of a portion of North Avenue in Atlanta, GA. As a class, we were tasked with the job of selecting an idea which we felt we could visualize by the use of a map. I chose to create a map in it’s simplest form, point A to point B, and find a way to display the perceived safety of the different areas on the map. I also thought it would be important to display what in the environment influenced that feeling of safety, and to rank it’s influence on a scale of green to red. The colored shapes can be hovered over and the user will be able see a bubble which shows what is influencing that particular area. The application has two different views: a hand-drawn, sketched view and a photographed and satellite view. For the satellite view, I walked along the opposite side of the street, taking photos of each inch. I stitched these photos together by hand, printed them out, and then traced over the span to create the sketched view. #gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: [...]
